Personal Bio
Lei Ti was born and raised in Kaohsiung, Republic of China, to a traditional Taiwanese family. In his Firecracker Pop series, Lei Ti reinterprets the spirit of his local culture for the digital age. The series’ theme is Chinese culture, but integrates elements of Western cultural fusion to present a new expression of modern Chinese culture.
In the Firecracker POP series, Chinese culture crashes together with Western culture, mixing in global lifestyles and pop culture, news and current affairs. Lei Ti is a pop artist at heart. His style is simple, definite, sometimes satirical, and reflects the issues of rebellious young generations dealing with the culture shock of globalization.
The method to the 2011 Firecracker POP series is performance-based, using firecrackers, fire and other media. The images are made up of burn marks from the firecrackers on paper or canvas. Using explosive media, there is an element of chaos that cannot be totally controlled. The resulting accidents give the finished paintings a cohesive yet intricate look. Lei Ti uses a creative principle similar to printmaking. Multiple layers isolate parts of the paper for burning, making it easier to ensure the fireworks burn the image correctly.
There are no slick art theories to define and ultimately limit the Firecracker Pop series. Lei Ti strives simply to present a new perspective on Chinese fine art, an interpretation accessible and appealing to current audiences.
