I took up fine arts at the University of Santo Tomas and the University of the East. My first job was as a political cartoonist. Although I`m a full-time children`s book illustrator now, I also do some serious painting on the side. Six of the picture books I`ve illustrated have been published and I`m now working on my seventh. My six published books are: First Around the Globe- The Story of Enrique; Tamales Day; Origin of the Frog; The Brothers Wu and the Good Luck Eel; Hans Christian Andersen- Once Upon a Time and The Brothers Grimm- Long Ago and Far Away. The book I`m working on now is "Mga Modernong Alamat/ Modern Myths". I have had three solo art exhibitions, so far. I was a runner-up in Tokyo`s 12th Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustration, and I was included in the 2002 Honour List of the Switzerland-based IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) for the excellence of my illustrations. In 1984, I won the top prize in the First Metrobank Annual Painting Competition. It was a prestigious competition then as it still is at present. I`m now trying to complete the set of artworks for my fourth solo show. As a painter, I started out as a surrealist, although my brand of surrealism got tinged later on with social realism. Now, I`m in some sort of a transition period, and have been busying myself in creating images that are more modern in form and technique. Although some of my works now are mere formalist exercises, I always go back to my narrative roots to turn out paintings with surreal or social realist themes.
